The Verdin Clock Company of Cincinnati
designed and manufactured the Marshall Field’s Tower Clock in
conjunction with architectural firm Hambrecht Terrell International of
New York, New York. According to David Verdin, one of the principals of
the historic Verdin Clock Company, the tower clock was a custom project
from start to finish. The foursided head of the clock is a replica of
the original 1897 Marshall Field’s clock that is still mounted on a
building (now Macy’s) at the corner of State Street and Washington in
Chicago. The tower clock was featured on the September 1991 cover of
Architectural Lighting magazine in a photo by Don Dubroff.
Verdin Clock has been in business in
Cincinnati, Ohio, since 1842 designing and installing bells, carillons,
glockenspiels, clocks, and towers and is recognized internationally.
Municipalities, colleges, country clubs, and retail and residential
spaces proudly display Verdin structures. In order to guarantee the
long-term quality of its products, the company still builds all its
creations in Cincinnati, and has remained family-owned for more than
five generations. Verdin Clock has generously provided the entire
provenance for the tower clock, including architectural drawings and the
company’s letters of correspondence with Marshall Field’s.
Prominent American sculptor William Crovello
is probably best known for his geometric sculpture "Curved
Cube" installed in the 1970s at the Time-Life Building in New York
City. His sculpture, “Katana” is one of the featured outdoor pieces
in Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens at Pepsico World Headquarters in
Purchase, New York. Crovello was born in 1929 and still maintains a
foundation in Manhattan. His “Valentine Column” is constructed of
painted aluminum and stands 22 feet tall.
Bernadine Silberman has been sculpting for
more than 20 years. She prefers chiseling marble and alabaster, but also
casts sculptures in bronze and stainless steel. Her sculptures have
received numerous awards, and some of her other works are in collections
of the Ohio State Capitol Building, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company,
and King Khalid in Saudi Arabia. Her “Black Bronze Form” sculpture
is a striking 9 feet tall by 5 feet square. Appraisals were performed by
founder and president, Bruce Olson, of L’idée Corporate Art Concepts
of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Olson is a metal sculptor, wood and stone
carver, as well as a painter, and his company has a 20-year history in
the appraisal business.
